Brussels, Kingdom of Belgium (Weltexpress). The 30 percent tariffs imposed by the United States of America (USA) on products from countries participating in the European Union (EU) will undermine fundamental transatlantic supply chains, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said after US President Donald J. Trump announced new tariffs starting 1 August 2025.

‘The introduction of 30% tariffs on EU exports would disrupt fundamental transatlantic supply chains, to the detriment of businesses, consumers and patients on both sides of the Atlantic,’ she said in a statement released by the European Commission’s press service. ‘We remain ready to work towards an agreement by 1 August. At the same time, we will take all necessary steps to protect the EU’s interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if necessary,’ she warned.

Earlier, Trump had published a letter to the President of the European Commission on his Truth Social platform, stating that from 1 August 2025, the US would ‘impose a tariff of only 30% on EU products shipped to the United States, regardless of any sectoral tariffs,’ which currently stand at 10%.
