Turin is called the cradle of Italian liberty – capital of the Duchy Savoy, then the Kingdom of Sardinia, ruled by the House of Savoy, it was the political and intellectual center of the Risorgimento. Several centuries have passed, but the foundations laid are etched in Turin’s grandness.

The political influence was lost after WW II, but it became a major player in industry, commerce and trade. Today, we know that the Italian automotive industry is home to FIAT, Lancia and Alfa Romeo.

The historical passages continue to enthral visitors the world over – rich in culture and architectural wonder, art galleries, restaurants, churches, palaces, opera houses, piazzas, gardens, theaters, libraries, museums and diverse events are extravagant.

Turin is a journey that takes you through its Baroque, Rococo, Neo-classical and art Nouveau periods – an art lovers paradise. One can say, a wonder to be met and a life experience you will never forget.

Historical steps began as early as the 15th century when the University of Turin was established. The public squares, castles and gardens were built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Mole Antonelliana, the city’s architectural symbol houses the Museo Nazionale del Cinema. World famous, the Holy Shroud is a major draw – its historical impact is of great religious significance to Christian followers.

Modern day events include the 1934 and 1990 FIFA World Cup, 2006 Winter Olympics, ATP Finals and most recently the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest.

Given Turin’s rich history, it would be remiss not to explore the cuisine and wines made famous by the Torinese and region.

Chocolate production has a special and traditional place in Turin, especially the ingot-shaped gianduiotto, named after Gianduja. Also, the bicerin – a hot drink made of espresso drinking chocolate and whole milk. A two week chocolate festival with producers include Caffarei, Streglio and Venchi.

Snack foods such as the tramezzini were first served – the cafe Mulassano devised the first Italian sandwich in 1925 – an alternative to English tea sandwiches and is still a hit to this day. The so called pizza al padellino or pizza al tegamino are small-sized, thick crust and deep-dish prepared favorites among the locals.

Piemonte wine in the region of Piedmont include the Barolo and Barbaresco, made from Nebbiolo grape. The Barbera and Dolcetto are also favorites. Naturally, the popular wines go well with some of Piemontese dishes – not to be missed: Bagna Cauda – antipasta, Fritto misto alla Piemontese, Brasato al Barolo, Agnolotti and Vitell Tonnato.

No question, the joy and pleasant surroundings found in Turin are abundant. The wonder is simply met while strolling the city – relaxing, breathtaking and every element of the Turin experience will fully capture the imagination. Take a small step through Italy’s history by walking the ancient streets and come away with endless impressions of grandeur.

Turin’s history and present day creativity builds fantastic stories – to be one of many who walked the ornate passages is but pure pleasure. Generations blend where young and old meet in piazzas, restaurants alike and enjoy the sun-filled arcades.
