New Delhi, Republic of India (Weltexpress). According to a senior official at the Indian Ministry of Defence, reports by the Reuters news agency that India has suspended the purchase of weapons from the United States are false and fabricated.
Reuters reported on Friday, 8 August 2025, citing sources, that the Republic of India had put plans to purchase weapons from the United States of America (USA) on hold due to the high import duties imposed on the Republic of India by US President Donald Trump.
In particular, talks on the purchase of Stryker combat vehicles manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems and Javelin anti-tank missiles developed jointly by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin have been put on hold.
According to the news agency, India had planned to send Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Washington in the coming weeks to announce some of the purchases. However, Singh cancelled the trip.
In February 2025, Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans for further arms purchases and agreed to jointly produce a range of defence equipment.
On 6 August 2025, the US imposed additional tariffs of 25% on India for its purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total duties against the South Asian republic to 50%. The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticised this measure as unfair.
