Washington, USA; Frankfurt am Main, Germany (Weltexpress). The US government in Washington is imposing additional punitive tariffs of 25 per cent on Bharat (Republic of India) in connection with the purchase of oil from the RF, with similar measures also possible against other countries. A corresponding order was signed by US President Donald Trump (Republican Party), as published on the White House website. The US President has determined ‘that it is necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem tariff on imports of articles from India that directly or indirectly import oil from the Russian Federation,’ the document states.

‘In accordance with applicable law, an additional ad valorem duty of 25 per cent shall be imposed on imports of Indian goods into the customs territory of the United States,’ the document continues. The Secretary of Commerce, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury, shall determine whether another country is directly or indirectly importing oil from the Russian Federation,” the document states. On this basis, recommendations will be made to the US President on whether to ‘impose an additional 25 per cent ad valorem tariff on imports of articles from that country.’ According to the government in Washington, this applies not only to crude oil from Russia but also to petroleum products.

‘Should another country take retaliatory measures against the United States in response to this measure,’ the US president may ‘modify this order to ensure the effectiveness of the measures ordered herein,’ the document also states.

The US punitive tariffs against Bharat are to come into force in 21 days, i.e. on 27 August 2025.

In New Delhi, the Foreign Ministry said: ‘We have already made our position clear on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and are made with the overriding objective of ensuring the energy security of the 1.4 billion people in Bharat.’

Trump had previously said that Bharat, which had imposed high tariffs on the US, was not behaving like a ‘good trading partner.’ On 4 August 2025, he announced that he would significantly increase tariffs on the purchase and resale of oil from the Russian Federation in Bharat. He had previously announced tariffs of 25 per cent on goods from Bharat. The Foreign Ministry in New Delhi condemned this move as unjustified, stating that Western countries had previously promoted such trade and continued to purchase goods and services from Russia themselves.
