Berlin, Germany (Weltexpress). FRUIT LOGISTICA this time was a unique global event for the fresh produce industry that was experienced by more than 70,000 trade visitors from over 130 countries on one side. And on the other 2,891 exhibitors from 84 countries presented a complete market overview. The high level of innovative strength was clearly demonstrated – not only by no less than 27 world premieres, but also by the FRUIT LOGISTICA Innovation Award.
World’s Coconut Trading from Spain is the winner in 2016 with its organic Genuine Coconut. The product comes with a patented seal and straw, although it’s a simple and maybe therefore genuinely refreshing coconut water drink with a lot of minerals and a high nutritional value. Thai Nam Hom coconuts are plucked, having been organically cultivated in the very heart of Thailand and regarded as first choice due to their quality, taste and smell. Well, we of WELTEXPRESS sipped that innovative natural drink in coconut jugs at the trade fair – and can only agree with the jurors.
Is this sector of industry a Garden Eden than? Not quite – as Freshfel’s Europe annual consumption monitor shows. The average consumption per capita of fresh fruit and vegetable in the EU-28 declined from 2004 to 2013 by 11% – or from 139 kg to 124 kg. Spain leads this analysis with a downturn of 33%! As a result, daily consumption levels in the EU-28 remain under the 400gr-per-day-treshold, recommended by the WHO. “To stop this downward trend, the industry has to find smart ways to benefit from new consumption trends such as the general focus on healthy lifestyle, the discovery of superfoods and the growing snacking culture” Freshfeld’s General Delegate Philippe Binard says. The market potential for an increase of consumption is enormous. Vegetarianism and veganism prove to be big opportunities as the general trend towards a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. The FRUIT LOGISTICA Innovation Award certainly leads the way!
