New York, USA (Weltexpress). The Carter Center, a non-governmental organisation founded in 1982 by former US President James Earl ‘Jimmy’ Carter Jr. and his wife Rosalynn Carter, has confirmed the death of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States. ‘Our founder, former US President Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,’ the organisation said on its X-site.
Official farewell ceremonies are to be held in Plains, where Carter was born on 1 October 1924, and in Washington, the capital of the USA.
Carter was not only a peanut farmer, but also served as Governor of the US state of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 and as President of the United States from 1977 to 1983. He is credited with both the Camp David Accords between the State of Israel and the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Torrijos-Carter treaties, which included the transfer of the Panama Canal to the Republic of Panama. He also negotiated with representatives of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on armaments and established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.
