According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing investors close to the company, Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, SpaceX (as written by the company), which is owned by capitalist Elon Musk, will invest $2 billion in X.AI Corp., or xAI (as written by the company), a start-up company whose employees developed the chatbot Grok, which is based on artificial intelligence.
The investment amount represents about half of the Grok manufacturer’s most recent capital increase, according to the WSJ. SpaceX’s investment is part of the $5 billion capital increase announced in June. One of the investors told the WSJ that xAI has taken on $5 billion in debt in addition to equity financing, and the start-up is expected to raise even more money at the turn of the year.
Musk founded the start-up xAI, which is engaged in the development of artificial intelligence, in April 2023.
