Paris, FR (Weltexpress). According to the Ministry of the Interior, more than 500,000 people took to the streets in the French Republic (FR) to protest against the plans of President Emmanuel Macron’s government. The FR government, which is a state of capital, is on the brink of bankruptcy. It wants to take on new debt and at the same time cut social spending, as reported in Le Figaro.

Other media outlets are talking about a million people. However, France’s largest trade union, the General Confederation of Labour (CGT), said that over a million people took part in nationwide protests, which turned violent in Paris, Nantes, Rennes, Lyon, Marseille and other cities when radicals attacked shops and banks. The police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. 80,000 police officers, armoured vehicles and drones were deployed to maintain public order.

A total of 700 different demonstrations and rallies took place in France.

Le Parisien reports, citing the Interior Ministry, that a total of 181 people were arrested during nationwide protests against the government’s planned cuts in social spending. Thirty-one people are said to have been detained in the capital, Paris. Twenty-two people are reported to have been injured, including eleven police officers and one journalist.
