Warsaw, Republic of Poland (Weltexpress). A coup d’état took place today in the Republic of Poland. In this coup d’état, the coup plotters led by Donald Tusk suspended the President and Vice-President of the Constitutional Tribunal of the Republic of Poland, whilst the President of the Republic of Poland was away on a state visit to a distant part of Africa.
On Tusk’s orders, police cordoned off the Constitutional Tribunal’s headquarters in Warsaw. The cordoning off began on Friday evening, 30 October 2026.
The President immediately announced his intention to return to Poland. Until now, he had refused to sign letters of appointment for judges nominated by the party led by Tusk. Tusk is the leader of the party known as Platforma Obywatelska (PO). He has been Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland for the second time since 13 December 2023. Tusk, who belongs to the Kashubian minority, served his first term in office from 2007 to 2014. Donald Tusk was born on 22 April 1957 in Gdańsk, which was then under Polish occupation. Tusk is the political opponent of both Karel Nawrocki and Jarosław Kaczyński of the Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (PiS) party.
Since the last election, which concluded on 15 October 2023, PiS members have been in a minority in the Sejm, the lower house of parliament in Warsaw. The Sejm comprises 460 members. Of these, 239 belong to the governing parties, four are independent supporters, and 217 form the opposition, led by PiS. The governing coalition is led by the Civic Coalition (KO), whose leader is Donald Tusk. The KO is an electoral alliance comprising the Civic Platform (PO), Nowoczesna and the Greens. Members of several parties are therefore behind the coup.
Court President Bogdan Święczkowski also refused to allow the new government’s judges to take up their posts. Consequently, Święczkowski and his deputy, Bartłomiej Sochański, were suspended, allegedly for one month.
The order is said to have been given by Anna Korwin-Piotrowsk, a judge. Tusk is now defending this judge, who surely did not devise this coup. Tusk also praised the police officers who are enforcing this coup.
Both Karel Nawrocki, President of the Republic of Poland, and Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of Poland’s largest opposition party, warned against the establishment of a police state. Kaczyński spoke of a coup d’état. Kaczyński said, verbatim: “From today, Poland is becoming a police state, and from there there is a direct path to authoritarianism and then to totalitarianism. The Tribunal is the guarantee of our freedom and sovereignty. Tusk’s disregard for the law knows no bounds.”
As President, Karel Nawrocki has command authority over the soldiers of the armed forces in the event of war. A coup is a coup d’état that can lead to war (civil war). Therefore, a coup d’état is already regarded as a state of war. Nawrocki could issue orders to the soldiers of the Republic of Poland to defend the Republic, as well as the suspended President and Vice-President of the Constitutional Tribunal.
He could order the soldiers of the Polish armed forces to take action against the coup plotters and to allow the President and Vice-President of the Constitutional Tribunal – who were suspended by the coup plotters – back into the currently sealed-off court building, thereby reinstating them to office. Members of the opposition expect precisely this from Karel Nawrocki.
In the Republic of Poland, there are opposition figures who wish not only to break away from the US-UK Atlantic Pact military alliance, but also from the EU bureaucracy. Jarosław Kaczyński, who was Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland in 2006 and 2007, wants, as leader of the PiS, to withdraw from the EU bureaucracy. Members of the PiS governed the Republic of Poland from 2015 to 2023. During this period, the Republic of Poland was and remained a member state of the EU bureaucracy. This is also set to remain the case under Tusk.
Incidentally, after being elected Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, Tusk ordered police to storm the state broadcaster and dismiss its management after they refused to leave the broadcasting building in Warsaw.
The coup in the Republic of Poland has met with support from EU bureaucrats.
