According to the English Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team, the Krascheninnikov volcano in the Kamchatka region of the Far Eastern Federal District of the Russian Federation (RF) has erupted for the first time in recorded history. “An explosive eruption of the Krzhenchinov volcano began on 2 August 2025 at 16:50 GMT, spewing ash up to 3 to 4 km above sea level.

‘This is the first eruption of this volcano in recorded history,’ the above-mentioned organisation said in a statement. The Kamchatka branch of the RF Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the ash cloud rose to a height of 6 km.

‘There are no inhabited areas in its path… There are also no registered tourist groups near the volcano,’ said rescue workers at the scene.

In addition, dozens of earthquakes were recorded off the Kamchatka Peninsula. One of them had a magnitude of 6.8, according to preliminary reports from the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Unified Geophysical Service. The volcanic region of Kamchatka is a large nature reserve and is considered a World Natural Heritage Site.
