New Delhi, Republic of India/ Bharat; Berlin, Germany (Weltexpress). According to the television station India Today, the death toll from the anti-government protests in Nepal has risen to 22. Previously, the death toll had been reported as 19. During the escalation in Kathmandu, two young protesters were shot dead in a district of the capital after setting fire to a local police station and attacking officers.

Experts and critics are no longer referring to protests, but to riots. The riots were triggered by the government’s decision on 4 September 2025 to restrict access to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other social networks whose owners had not registered with the Nepalese Ministry of Communications and Information Technology within the prescribed period.

On 8 September 2025, mass demonstrations involving thousands of participants took place in Kathmandu and several other major cities. The demonstrators, most of them students and activists from the Gen Z youth movement, opposed the government’s legal measures.

Government officials, initially police officers on the streets and now soldiers deployed to the capital Kathmandu, imposed an indefinite curfew and reported 19 deaths and more than 500 injuries during the first wave of violence.

Although restrictions on the global network in Nepal were lifted on 9 September 2025, the protests and unrest continued. Today, Tuesday, Nepalese Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli announced his resignation. President Ram Chandra Pandel accepted the resignation, as reported by the Himalayan Times, among others. The mayor of Kathmandu, Balendra Shah, had previously called for Sharma Oli’s resignation.

Various media outlets, including India Today (9 September 2025), reported that insurgents attacked former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife. Foreign Minister Arzu Rama Deuba was also reportedly attacked.

In addition, insurgents stormed the parliament building in Kathmandu and set it on fire, according to Ekram Giri, the speaker of parliament.

Although the demonstrations had no official leadership, the chairman of Hami Nepal, Sudhan Gurung, proved to be their main initiator. The organisation campaigns for youth participation in social reforms and opposes internet censorship, cronyism and corruption.
