New York, USA (Weltexpress). Artificial intelligence (AI) could replace most programmers within the next year, according to US billionaire and former CEO of Google LLC Eric Schmidt. ‘We believe that the vast majority of programmers will be replaced by AI programmers within the next year,’ Schmidt said at the AI+ Biotechnology Summit in April 2025.
Eric Schmidt believes that AI models will evolve rapidly to perform a greater number of highly specialised tasks that can currently only be done by humans. Schmidt also expects AI programmes to be able to solve complex mathematical problems that top graduates are working on within the next year. ‘By 2027, AI systems will begin to improve themselves and independently adapt and improve the code they develop in their research programmes,’ Schmidt emphasised. Between 2028 and 2030, AI models will be able to compete with the world’s best physicists, mathematicians, writers and artists. Given the speed of technological progress, AI will reach the stage of ‘artificial superintelligence’ by 2031, when the best programmes will finally surpass human capabilities, function autonomously and improve themselves without human intervention, Eric Schmidt continued.
In this context, the expert emphasised that the world still lacks a unified framework for regulating and managing AI technologies, which poses significant risks to humanity.
