Palantir, Dataroom and the war in Ukraine: plenty of data power, but no turning point on the battlefield

Berlin, Germany (Weltexpress). Palantir and Brave1 Dataroom are regarded as symbols of a new, AI-supported form of warfare, exemplified by the conflict in Ukraine. Yet a sober assessment reveals that whilst the technology can speed up processes and improve systems, it is not a ‘wonder weapon’ capable of deciding the outcome of a war.

Hardly any other aspect of modern warfare is currently so closely associated with the promise of technological superiority as the use of artificial intelligence, data analysis and autonomous drone systems. Palantir and the Ukrainian platform Brave1 Dataroom, in particular, are at the centre of this, including in German-Ukrainian military defence cooperation. In parts of the uncritical, technology-obsessed Western media coverage, the impression is created that modern software can fundamentally change the nature of war and give Ukraine a decisive military advantage.

However, a sober assessment of the available information paints a much more nuanced picture. Palantir and Dataroom can make existing Ukrainian systems faster, more precise and more efficient. However, they are neither a ‘Terminator system’ nor a substitute for weapons, soldiers or industrial production capacity. Their significance lies primarily in adding an additional digital multiplier to existing military capabilities.

Amidst all the hype surrounding AI, the most important component is often overlooked – either deliberately or through ignorance – without which Palantir and Dataroom would lose the bulk of their military multiplier function. For without the intelligence gathered by US satellites and other high-tech military surveillance and reconnaissance systems – which is fed in real time by US intelligence agencies into Palantir and Dataroom – there would probably be no current fascination with this supposed new wonder weapon. All these systems are exorbitantly expensive, and neither Ukraine nor Iran has the money or the technological capabilities to create such an environment, which took the US and the Soviet Union/Russia decades to build.

But back to ‘Brave1 Dataroom’, which is regarded as a secure platform built on Palantir software.

According to the available information, more than a hundred Ukrainian companies are using real combat data, in particular imagery and thermal images of aerial targets such as Shahed and Geran drones. The aim is to train AI models under real-world weather, lighting and sensor conditions. Ultimately, this should enable targets to be detected, classified and, in some cases, tracked autonomously more quickly. At the same time, Palantir systems are being used for data fusion, situational awareness and operational planning.

This can certainly be relevant on the battlefield. Every second counts, particularly during Russian drone attacks involving large numbers of drones. When software merges data from drones, satellites, radar and other reconnaissance assets, targets can be prioritised more quickly and available defences deployed in a more targeted manner. However, this does not eliminate the problem. Russia can increase the number of drones deployed, alter their flight profiles, deploy decoys or step up electronic countermeasures.

This is precisely where a key limitation of the digital approach lies. The war is evolving into a race to adapt. Ukraine, with the help of Western intelligence services and reconnaissance findings, is improving detection, data fusion and autonomous interception systems; Russia responds with electronic warfare, deception, greater numbers and its own onboard AI. According to available sources, some Russian drones are equipped with machine vision systems and more autonomous navigation capabilities. This enables them, under certain conditions, to continue operating even if the connection to a human operator (drone pilot) is disrupted.

The Russian portrayal of Palantir also differs from the Western one. Russian media frequently depict the software as part of a Western command and reconnaissance network and emphasise its potential role in target selection and strikes deep into Russian territory.

In practical terms, sources from military-technical publications also describe essentially the same functions: integrating data, identifying targets more quickly and speeding up military decision-making.

It is therefore crucial to distinguish between a force multiplier and a war-deciding capability. Software can enhance the effectiveness of existing weapons. It can make drones more intelligent, speed up reconnaissance and reduce response times. However, it does not produce additional artillery, air defence systems, ammunition or, above all, soldiers.

This limitation becomes particularly clear in ground combat. AI can identify targets, control drones or support resupply and reconnaissance. However, it cannot permanently occupy a city, clear a trench or control a building. People are still needed for that. Even Russia, despite increasing automation, continues to rely on infantry, artillery and glide bombs. The available sources therefore unanimously conclude that AI and drones can take on certain tasks and reduce casualties, but cannot replace a human presence on the ground.

This also puts into perspective the notion that Palantir or Dataroom could fundamentally alter the outcome of the war. Their impact is real, but it operates within the context of a larger military system. Troop strength, mobilisation, munitions production, air defence, artillery, logistics, electronic warfare and the ability to actually hold captured territory remain decisive.

Greater digitalisation can therefore alter the course of the war without deciding its outcome. It can increase efficiency and, in particular, help Ukraine to partially compensate for limited human resources through technological assistance from the West. At the same time, the very same technological developments enable Russia to adapt its own systems and maintain pressure on the Ukrainian defences.

The Western hype surrounding Palantir and Dataroom should therefore be viewed with caution. These are important technological tools, not a silver bullet. They can speed up decision-making and enhance the survivability of individual systems, but they do not solve Ukraine’s fundamental military and political problems.

The most realistic conclusion is therefore that Palantir and Brave1 Dataroom can influence the nature of individual engagements, but they do not automatically alter the balance of power in the war as a whole. Technology can accelerate adaptation – but it cannot override the material, personnel and political foundations of a war. If it is not accompanied by a solution to the fundamental strategic problems, there is even a possibility that, rather than bringing about a decisive outcome, it will simply prolong both sides’ ability to continue the existing war of attrition.

This does not in any way render Palantir and Dataroom militarily insignificant. It simply means viewing their role realistically: they are accelerators and amplifiers of certain weapon systems, particularly in relation to air warfare – but they are not technology capable of averting Ukraine’s inevitable defeat.
