Berlin, Germany (Weltexpress). Established in 1846 as the first municipal park in eastern Berlin, today’s Volkspark Friedrichshain was based on an idea by Peter Joseph Lenné and was planned as a recreational park. Today, more than ever, it serves as an amusement park in a metropolis of immigrants, where German is spoken less and less, but where people love to have barbecues in the summer. Ice cream from Italy goes perfectly with that.

Ice cream from a small ice cream parlor called Il Gelataio. It’s a must-be at the large Volkspark. Since 2009, this family-run business has made a name for itself with authentic Italian gelato, made with fresh and natural ingredients and stirred slowly. Fabio and Marco Gargiulo highlight “the authentic craftsmanship and passion that goes into every single one of our handmade gelati.”

On the homepage of the small ice cream parlor Il Gelataio Berlin on the World Wide Web, the “selection of the finest ingredients” is highlighted, noting that “organic dairy products and fresh, natural ingredients—from fresh fruit to creamy milk and fine chocolate” are used. These carefully selected mixtures are then “gently poured into the ice cream machine, where they slowly freeze into creamy gelato.”

Currently, a scoop of premium ice cream costs 2 euros and 40 cents. Ice cream sundaes with three scoops each, plus whipped cream and a cookie, currently start at 7 euros and 50 cents. The “Amaretto” ice cream sundae is likely the classic choice. Other sundaes, such as “Chocolate,” “Malaga,” “Egg Liqueur,” and “Strawberry,” as well as spaghetti ice cream, are offered as “surprise bags.” Bluntly speaking, these surprises might fit into the scene of many cones found in Volkspark Friedrichshain.

Coffee specialties are also served alongside the ice cream offerings, but an espresso—gladly served with ice or Sambuca—is and remains the ultimate treat at the large Volkspark Friedrichshain in the small ice cream parlor
