Rome, Italy (Weltexpress). Talks on the makeup of the new European Commission proposed by its President Ursula von der Leyen have reached an impasse and may not be resolved by December 1, when the body is supposed to take office, the Euractiv news website writes.According to the media outlet, von der Leyen’s meeting with the heads of the factions that backed her re-election in July has come to nought.

The main issue is rooted in the European People’s Party’s disagreements with socialists and democrats. The party opposed the nomination of Spain’s Teresa Ribera for vice president, while socialists and democrats said they would not vote for Raffaele Fitto, a protege of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whose party Brothers of Italy is seen by center-left forces as a far-fight one.

Some other candidates, those nominated by Hungary, for example, are also mired in political controversy. For Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, this may be an opportunity to take revenge on von der Leyen for openly boycotting his country’s presidency of the European Union, the InsideOver news outlet reports.

According to Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper, the current situation calls into question the entire new European Commission and creates real problems for its president.
